SAY NO TO RAPE CULTURE AT DISNEY!
PLEASE REBLOG if you think you have followers that would be interested in spreading this. I don’t usually ask people to reblog, but we need to spread the petition!
HERE IS THE PETITION
This is how it starts out:
(trigger warning for content)
“To be honest, I feel more violated by the way Disney treated me than I feel from being raped, and I’m worried for every other person that has been in my situation.”
-Dana Wierzbicki
In this petition, we are requesting that Disney:
A) Apologize to Dana Wierzbicki for her experience with their inadequately trained staff
B) WDW make changes to their policies so that any future victims receive adequate care, counseling and advice, and are treated respectfully during this process.
C) WDW ensure that all program participants are given standard, verbal discussions of appropriate contact with other staff (getting consent, not ignoring a lack of consent)
The original article is here. http://www.xojane.com/it-happened-to-me/disney-rape
Below is the type of treatment she received from individuals who were supposed to be there to help her.
To quote the article:
“Well, now you know not to be hanging around boys in the middle of the night. You know what they want.” (Employee assistance counselor)
”She continued to make excuses for my rapist. She asked where he was from and I told her, “France.” She remarked that “cultural differences” were probably part of the problem, telling me that the French have a “different view of love” than we Americans do.” (counselor again)
“Are you sure you’re not reporting this as a rape because you wanted him to be your boyfriend and he said no?” (employee relations)

I’ve been following this and it’s really disgusting how they treated her, and the victim blaming is all too so personally familiar to me, and this came from Disney employees who were supposed to HELP her.
Even if these were just individual bad actors, Disney needs to act to make sure that they have adequate policy and training in place to prevent future assault victims in their employ from being treated like this when they need help.
Signal boosting for people who might care and want to sign the petition.

This is Senator Leticia Van de Putte (D), and she needs to be known and recognized right alongside Senator Wendy Davis.

She couldn’t be at the start of the senate session because her father died in a car crash last week and the funeral was the day of Davis’…

Why the word “stupid” is considered ableist

queeroctopus:

neoptolemos:

Will someone explain to me why the word “stupid” is considered ableist? Because this seriously baffles me.

“Stupid” has been used by the medical community and the community at large to describe people with developmental disorders. My boyfriend was mocked by teachers and called “stupid” because he’s dyslexic. My doctor told my mother I was “stupid” because of various aspects of my autism. “Stupid” has been used to justify locking people like me in asylums, in basements. “Stupid” has been used to disavow testimony given by people like me. My grandmother is what is still medically classified in some places as “retarded” and as a child, was abused by various people in various ways, and when she spoke about it, nobody believed her because she was “stupid”. The eugenics movement is against us “stupid” people even existing, and I consider anyone who believes in always aborting Down Syndrome fetuses as part of this, by the way.

Intelligence is not a measure of character. Intelligence, in many ways, is also subjective. I cannot remember names or act in the usual social way. I cannot hold a pen My boyfriend cannot spell or pronounce things well. My autistic cousin Joe has been taught most of his life how to tie his shoes and he still cannot. Yet, we are all smart in various ways. My partner has a wide array of knowledge, as do I. And Joe is bloody smart for his age.

Insult someone by calling them ignorant, deliberately ill-informed, pig-headed, stubborn. Do not insult intelligence levels. Ignorance is a choice, intelligence… well, it just isn’t. Your capacity to learn, and your access to learning materials, aren’t always under your control, and have nothing to do with your character.

Bet you haven’t thought about this before: How “slut-shaming” has been written into school dress codes across the country.

Rape culture is subtle.  ”Rape culture is also evident in the attitudes that lead school administrators to treat young girls’ bodies as inherently “distracting” to the boys who simply can’t control themselves.”  Solution?  Make the girls cover up.  Because of course, boys will be boys and just can’t learn to control themselves.  Of course that works.  Of course fully clothed women don’t get raped.  Of course a woman’s naked skin is “inappropriate.”
There are very clear logical issues here.
